Le parole per raccontarla

Italians love to disagree, but rarely head-on:
Sì, però… (yes, but…)
Dipende. (It depends.)
Da un lato… dall'altro… (On one hand… on the other…)
Non sono del tutto d'accordo. (I don't completely agree.)
Diciamo che… (Let's say that…)

— Secondo me usiamo troppe parole inglesi.

Ciao! Quarta storia, e oggi ti chiedo un'opinione.

Hi! Fourth story, and today I'm asking for your opinion.

Divertente, no?

Yesterday we saw smart working, footing and box. Fun, right? But in Italy not everyone agrees.

In 2015 there was a petition called "Say it in Italian". It asked politicians and companies to use Italian words when they exist.

Why say "spending review" when we can say revisione della spesa?

The Accademia della Crusca, which has looked after the Italian language since the 1500s, agreed.

On the other side, many people say that languages have always taken words from each other.

English took "bank" from Italian, from banco, and then balcony, umbrella and piano. And nobody thinks English got poorer.

Io cosa penso? Diciamo che… dipende.

What do I think? Let's say… it depends.

On one hand, when a public office writes to me in English, it annoys me: not everyone understands it.

On the other hand, a language that takes in new words is a living language.
