The note in the lift
Storia 2 di 5 · Five stories to tell in Italian

Le parole per raccontarla
Face to face, Italians soften everything. The complaint is still there, it just arrives wrapped:
Scusi, Le posso chiedere una cosa? (Excuse me, can I ask you something?)
Le dispiacerebbe abbassare un po' la musica? (Would you mind turning the music down a bit?)
Non vorrei disturbare, però… (I wouldn't want to bother you, but…)
Magari la prossima volta… (Maybe next time…)
Non me ne ero accorto.

Ciao, eccoci alla seconda storia. Oggi entriamo in un condominio italiano.
Hi, here we are at the second story. Today we're going inside an Italian apartment building.
In Italy, in the cities, almost everyone lives in a condominio, an apartment building. And the condominio is like a small country.
There's the amministratore, a bit like the government. There's the residents' meeting once a year: that's the parliament, and sometimes people argue for hours about the colour of the front door.
And then there's the building's literature: the avviso, the notice.
You find the notice in the lift or near the mailboxes. And it always has the same style:
"Residents are reminded that bicycles may not be left in the entrance hall. Please close the front door. Thank you for your cooperation."
Hai notato? Non c'è nessuno. Nessuno ricorda, nessuno prega, nessuno ringrazia. Si ricorda, si prega, si ringrazia.
Did you notice? There's nobody there. Nobody reminds, nobody asks, nobody thanks. It is reminded, it is asked, it is thanked.
That way nobody accuses anybody… but everyone knows exactly who the notice is for.
When you meet your neighbour on the stairs, though, it's different. You say it kindly:
"Excuse me, can I ask you something? I wouldn't want to bother you, but last night the music was a bit loud." The whole complaint is in that però, that "but".
Io sono cresciuta vicino a Milano, e conosco bene queste regole.
I grew up near Milan, and I know these rules well.
